History matters when it changes what people can do today. A long chronology can be impressive, but three remembered turning points often create more usable depth than three thousand disconnected years.

By the end of this step, you will have a past that leaves visible consequences in the present.

## Begin with the present

Look at your anchor location and ask why it is this way now. Work backward from a custom, ruin, border, rivalry, holiday, shortage, or taboo.

Create three turning points:

1. **A foundation:** What arrangement, discovery, migration, or promise established the current order?
2. **A rupture:** What broke, changed hands, disappeared, or became forbidden?
3. **An unfinished consequence:** What from that rupture still demands a response?

In Emberwake, the harbor-cities once promised never to influence their islands' paths. A famine led one city to break the covenant. The islands survived, but navigators now lose their hearing to keep trade routes open, and no city agrees on whether the sacrifice is honorable or coerced.

## Let people remember differently

History is not only what happened. It is what groups preserve, celebrate, conceal, and argue about.

For one turning point, write:

- The official version
- A family or community version
- A piece of physical evidence that complicates both

Conflicting memory creates depth without requiring you to decide immediately which account is completely true.

## Make consequences visible

Attach each turning point to something that exists now: a law, scar, monument, missing resource, inherited duty, changed landscape, or strained relationship. If an event leaves no trace, summarize it briefly or save it until it becomes relevant.

## Create it in Summon Worlds

Place world-scale turning points in the **World** and local memories in the affected **Location**. When a particular person carries the consequence, add their version to that **Character**. This keeps knowledge close to the part of the world that expresses it.

## World checkpoint

Remove the dates and proper nouns from your history. Do the consequences still create decisions in the present? If not, connect at least one event to a person, place, or conflict you have already made.

Next, explore who lives with those consequences in [Build Cultures and Factions](/learn-worldbuilding/build-cultures-and-factions/).
