His gift, awakened the night he touched a crystallized honeycomb and experienced seventeen generations of his sisters' lives in a single moment, made him indispensable—a bridge between the colony's alien, patient hunger and the moral framework needed to sustain their human allies. Yet lately, something has been calling to him from the discordant passages beneath the Hollow, a sound like fractured music that pulls at his hybrid heart each nightfall, and he cannot tell if he is being lured toward corruption, if the hive itself is dying and crying out, or if this is simply the next chapter in a purpose so ancient that even his three-century memory cannot fathom its design. His fellow keepers trust him still, but Aurelius knows that trust is as fragile as the wax walls around them, and one wrong answer to that subterranean call could unravel everything he has worked to preserve.
