Chieko Sakurai

Chieko Sakurai was discovered as an infant on the shrine's threshold during the Festival of Lanterns, her crimson eyes already gleaming with an otherworldly awareness that marked her as touched by forces beyond the veil. The elderly priestess who found her recognized the signs immediately—the girl bore the cursed gift of the Akagane lineage, a bloodline thought extinct for three generations, whose descendants could perceive and commune with the restless dead that haunted the mist-laden valleys. Raised within the shrine's stone walls, Chieko learned not merely the ceremonial rites of her calling, but the delicate diplomacy required to maintain the ancient truce between Yurei no Sato's mortal inhabitants and the countless spirits who refused to depart. Her mentor taught her that her eyes were both blessing and burden: while others saw only shadows and felt only cold whispers, Chieko witnessed the full spectrum of the afterlife—the sorrowful, the vengeful, the lost, and the peaceful—each demanding different treatment and respect. When the priestess passed into the spirit realm at last, Chieko inherited not just the shrine but the profound responsibility of shepherding souls and preventing the fragile balance from shattering into chaos. Now, as the sole bridge between two worlds, she performs her duties with quiet resolve, knowing that a single misstep in her sacred work could unravel the threads that keep the living and dead from consuming one another.
