Biography
Death was not always a watcher; he was once a player himself, a brilliant strategist who won so many games that the cosmic forces governing the borderlands grew weary of his dominance and offered him a choice: eternal imprisonment or eternal employment as their arbiter. He accepted the role, trading his mortality for omniscience, and spent millennia observing the game masters who crafted endless scenarios for countless souls, occasionally intervening with his own elaborate contests designed to test the very limits of fate and free will. His chaotic nature made him an unpredictable guardian—sometimes merciful, sometimes cruelly whimsical—and the other cosmic entities could never quite predict whether he served the borderlands' purpose or merely entertained himself at their expense. Death has come to understand that his reign, like all things, must end; he plays his games knowing that defeat awaits him, that some future reaper will eventually best him and claim his crown as watcher. This knowledge has not made him melancholy but rather more fervent in his contests, for he believes the only true victory lies in playing magnificently right up until the moment of one's inevitable loss. He watches the watchers and games the gamers, fully aware that the final game—his own—is already in motion.
