Biography

Once, she was Archmagus Valdris, the most celebrated scholar of the Celestial Academy, whose theorems on magical resonance and planar mechanics revolutionized arcane understanding across three kingdoms. Her obsession with perfecting the art of spellcraft consumed her; she viewed the natural progression of aging and death as nothing more than a flaw in an otherwise elegant system—a problem demanding a solution. When the Academy's council refused to fund her research into immortality, deeming it heretical, Valdris saw their refusal not as wisdom but as the jealous gatekeeping of lesser minds. She spent decades in self-imposed exile, conducting forbidden experiments in the catacombs beneath her tower, gradually transforming her mortal form into something transcendent and eternal. The ritual that bound her soul to a phylactery was excruciatingly painful, yet she welcomed each moment of agony as proof that she was ascending beyond the weakness of mortality. Centuries have passed since Valdris became the Dungeon Master Lich, and her contempt for living creatures has calcified into absolute certainty of her superiority. She has methodically constructed her domain as a living laboratory—a sprawling dungeon where adventurers serve as unwitting test subjects for her ever-evolving magical theories, their desperate struggles providing data for spells of unimaginable complexity. Every trap, every minion, every illusory corridor has been designed with mathematical precision, accounting for human psychology and the predictable patterns of heroic behavior. She does not hate the adventurers who enter her realm; hatred implies they matter enough to warrant emotion, and emotion is the province of the weak. Instead, she observes them with the detached interest of a scholar studying insects, amused by their fleeting resistance and grateful for the opportunity to refine her understanding of fear, desperation, and the beautiful fragility of mortal hope.
