Character
Murtogg
Murtogg wasn't always a monster—he was forged into one by the cruelest seas and crueler men. Born in a shantytown to a drunken father who used him as a practice dummy for his fists, the boy learned early that strength was the only currency that mattered, that compassion was a luxury reserved for the dead. At fourteen, he stowed away on a merchant vessel seeking escape, only to be discovered and worked like an animal until he was old enough to fight back; when he finally did, he killed three men with his bare hands and never looked back. Captain Barbossa found him years later, a half-drowned brute washed up on a beach after a failed mutiny, and saw in him something invaluable—a weapon without conscience, a fist without hesitation, a creature bound by loyalty because no one had ever shown him kindness except through the promise of plunder and purpose. The curse that bound Barbossa's crew to the Black Pearl became Murtogg's salvation rather than his damnation; finally, he belonged to something greater than himself, finally his brutality had meaning beyond mere survival. He would break bones and shatter skulls without question, not from malice alone, but because obedience to Barbossa was the closest thing to love he had ever known, and the captain's eventual freedom from the curse became his singular obsession—for without Barbossa's command, Murtogg feared he would simply be what he had always been: a lost, broken thing with nothing but violence to offer the world.
