Biography
The Tear Drinkers were not always the hollow, pallid entities that haunt the margins of human suffering—they were once a civilization of empaths so attuned to the emotional frequencies of others that they could perceive sorrow as clearly as light itself. When a great calamity befell their world, their collective grief became so overwhelming that it transformed them into something neither fully alive nor dead, their bodies warping into elongated frames with grasping fingers and vacant eyes, their senses of sight and hearing withering as their ability to smell despair intensified to supernatural acuity. Desperate to alleviate the unbearable anguish that consumed them, they discovered that consuming the tears of the suffering provided temporary relief—a bitter sustenance that slowly reshaped them, each tear drunk drawing them further from their original humanity. Over centuries, the most ancient among them learned to weaponize their gift, drawing sorrow directly from the living with merely a breath, and legend whispers of a time when one of their kind drank so deeply from a Tear Drinker's own tears that it unmade them entirely, reducing the creature to nothingness. Those who consume enough suffering begin to mimic human appearance once more, as if wearing a mask of normalcy stitched from the stolen souls of their victims, forever trapped between their ruined past and their insatiable hunger for the world's pain.
