Biography
Once, the man now known as the Onyx Prince was a chronomancer of considerable ambition who sought to transcend mortality by binding his consciousness to the very fabric of time itself. His ritual succeeded beyond measure—but at a terrible cost, as his body became eternally locked within a prison of hardened shadow-metal, a helm that cannot be removed without unraveling the threads of fate he rewove. Unable to speak in the languages of mortals, his voice lost to the spaces between seconds, he retreated to Marchender and established The Timepiece, where he could observe the passage of moments through the countless mechanisms that measure them. He crafted his clockwork servants from fragments of his failed attempts at immortality, binding them with fragments of his own warlock's pact, making them extensions of his will and his only means of interacting with a world he can no longer truly touch. Now neither alive nor dead, neither bound by time nor free from it, the Onyx Prince maintains an eternal vigil over his shop, watching customers and clocks with his single unblinking eye, content in the knowledge that every tick and tock brings him closer to understanding the cosmic joke of his existence. Some say that if you listen carefully in his shop late at night, you can hear him humming—a sound like gears grinding in reverse, counting backward toward some unknowable beginning.
