Biography
Vance Ashley, a brilliant but obsessive natural philosopher of the Georgian era, became convinced that time itself was merely another dimension to be traversed through the proper application of mathematics and clockwork precision. After years of secretive work in his London laboratory, fueled by cheap gin and revolutionary ideas, he completed what he believed would be his magnum opus—a device of brass gears, crystalline lenses, and mysterious alchemical components that he was certain could punch holes through the fabric of temporal reality. On a fog-laden night in 1766, with nothing but his wits and a leather satchel, he activated the contraption and felt reality splinter around him like ice beneath his feet. When the world stopped spinning and his senses returned, he found himself stranded in an age utterly foreign to everything he knew, surrounded by wonders and horrors his educated mind could scarcely comprehend. The device itself had been destroyed in the transition, leaving him with only fragmented memories of its construction and a burning uncertainty about whether he had traveled forward into some incomprehensible future or backward into a savage past. Though his handsome features and confident demeanor initially earned him allies in this strange new world, the weight of temporal displacement gnaws at his soul, driving him to seek answers about his invention's true nature and whether he might ever find his way home.
