Gondolin

Created by Streicher

Nestled within the hidden valley of Tumladen in northern Beleriand, Gondolin stands as one of the most magnificent and carefully concealed cities in the known world. The metropolis is surrounded on all sides by the towering Echoriath peaks, creating an impenetrable natural fortress that has protected its inhabitants for countless ages. Entry to this secret realm is granted only through the narrow, winding gorge of Orfalch Echor, a passage guarded by seven imposing gates that have never been breached by unwanted visitors. The city itself rises majestically upon Amon Gwareth, a broad hill at the valley's center, where gleaming white walls and smooth stone staircases create an otherworldly landscape of extraordinary beauty. At the heart of Gondolin stands the magnificent palace of King Turgon, crowned by the tallest tower in all the realm and overlooking a grand central square dominated by a luminous fountain of crystalline waters. The city's most sacred treasures are the artificial trees Glingal and Belthil, carefully cultivated replicas of the legendary Two Trees that once illuminated the blessed lands across the sea. The population, known as the Gondolindrim, is organized into twelve noble houses including the prestigious House of the Golden Flower and the House of the Wing, each contributing to the city's governance and defense. To preserve its hidden sanctuary, King Turgon has decreed that no inhabitant may ever leave the city's protective walls, ensuring that the location of this jeweled realm remains forever unknown to the outside world.

Landmarks

The Fountain of Amon Gwareth

A magnificent crystalline fountain situated in the central plaza atop the hill of Amon Gwareth, its waters flowing in intricate patterns that catch and refract the light of Gondolin's luminous stones. The fountain serves as both a gathering place for the Gondolindrim and a symbol of the city's connection to the blessed realms of Valinor. Adventurers who study its waters carefully may notice that they seem to shimmer with an otherworldly radiance, and local legends whisper that those pure of heart can glimpse visions of distant lands within its depths. The fountain's base is carved with the heraldic symbols of all twelve noble houses, making it an ideal location to learn about Gondolin's political structure and history.

The Hall of Mirrors

A vast underground chamber beneath the King's Palace where the walls are lined with polished mithril and crystal, creating an infinite reflection of light from enchanted orbs suspended throughout the space. The hall serves as both a treasury and a meditation chamber for the royal family, its dazzling geometry designed to mirror the beauty of the Two Trees themselves. Few outsiders have ever witnessed its splendor, and the chamber is said to hold records of Gondolin's greatest secrets inscribed upon its crystalline pillars.
