The Shadowlands stands as a tragic testament to the fall of one of the continent's greatest civilizations. Once the jewel of Eastern Alderan, this region flourished as a vital commercial crossroads where merchants from the Western Romia Empire and beyond converged to trade exotic goods and cultural knowledge. The landscape that once bloomed with verdant forests and prosperous settlements now lies beneath an unnatural pall of darkness that seems to possess a malevolent consciousness of its own. The pervasive shadows have become predatory entities, reaching out to consume any living creature unfortunate enough to cross their path, leaving behind only desolation and silence. At the heart of this cursed realm rises the Tower of Woe, a towering monument to corruption that pierces the perpetual gloom at the center of the ruined city of Lortalan. From this sinister spire, the sorceress Morgana exerts her iron grip over the entire region, perpetuating the darkness that chokes the land. The once-magnificent city of Lortalan has been transformed into a haven for fanatical cultists and twisted heretics who serve Morgana's dark designs, their devotion deepening the corruption with each passing day. Nature itself has withered under the shadow's influence, with twisted vegetation and poisoned waters replacing the abundant resources that once sustained the region. The few travelers who venture into The Shadowlands seeking answers or redemption rarely return, their fates consumed by the very darkness they sought to understand.

Landmarks

The Merchant's Ossuary

A sprawling underground necropolis beneath the ruins of Lortalan's former market district, where the skeletal remains of traders and their wares lie entombed. The ossuary is a labyrinth of bone-lined chambers and vaults, each containing the preserved goods and treasures of merchants from the prosperous era before the shadow consumed the land. Adventurers who venture into its depths will find ledgers written in fading ink, jewelry still adorning skeletal fingers, and whispers of the dead that echo through the corridors. However, the shadow has begun to seep through cracks in the stone, animating some of the remains and corrupting the very air within. Ancient merchant guilds left behind cryptic maps and ciphers that may reveal the location of a powerful artifact or the source of Morgana's dark influence.

The Weeping Market

Once the grand central bazaar of Lortalan, the Weeping Market now stands as a haunting monument to the land's fall. Crumbling merchant stalls and collapsed pavilions are overgrown with bioluminescent fungi that cast an eerie green glow through the perpetual gloom. The ground is slick with a dark, oily substance that seeps up from cracks in the stone—likely the same shadow-essence that emanates from the Tower of Woe. Adventurers report hearing whispers of long-dead traders echoing between the ruins, and the shadows here seem more aggressive than elsewhere, occasionally coalescing into vaguely humanoid shapes. At the market's heart lies a dried-up fountain, its basin filled with black water that reflects nothing, and scattered throughout are merchant goods turned to ash and bone—remnants of those caught when the shadows first consumed the city.
