The Sinks

Created by FENIKS

The Sinks represent the industrial underbelly of the Skygrid Empire, a sprawling network of processing facilities, waste treatment plants, and salvage operations that have fallen into severe disrepair over decades of neglect. Once vital to the empire's prosperity, these lower sectors now languish beneath perpetual clouds of acrid smog that sting the eyes and burn the lungs, creating an almost impenetrable haze that obscures the crumbling infrastructure below. The stench of decomposing refuse, chemical runoff, and corroded machinery permeates every corner, a constant reminder of the empire's refuse and forgotten byproducts. Massive rusted pipes leak noxious fluids into abandoned channels, while skeletal frameworks of conveyor systems hang precariously overhead, threatening collapse at any moment. The few inhabitants who remain—desperate salvagers, exiled outcasts, and those too poor to escape—eke out dangerous livings scavenging valuable materials from the wreckage. Toxic pools of unidentified liquids dot the landscape, and mutated creatures have begun appearing in the deepest sections, thriving in the poisoned environment. The empire's upper echelons have long since turned their attention skyward, leaving The Sinks to deteriorate into a lawless, hazardous realm where danger lurks in every shadow and structural failure is an ever-present threat.

Landmarks

The Precipice Vats

A series of massive concrete cisterns arranged in descending tiers, each one collecting different grades of industrial waste and chemical byproducts. The largest vat, cracked and weeping caustic liquid, sits at the lowest point where a skeletal conveyor system once transported refuse downward. Rusted pipes jut from the vat walls at irregular angles, some still dripping viscous sludge into pools of unknown composition that emit noxious fumes. The metal catwalks connecting the vats are corroded and sag dangerously in places, their railings long since stripped away, while warning signs—faded and illegible—hang askew from chains. Adventurers investigating this landmark might discover that something large has made its nest within the deepest vat, or that the chemical composition of the waste has begun to shift in unnatural ways.

The Sorting Foundry

A sprawling warehouse structure with a partially collapsed roof, where massive mechanical sorters once separated valuable materials from refuse. Enormous metal arms and sorting mechanisms hang frozen mid-motion, their joints seized by rust and corrosion, while conveyor belts sag under the weight of decades of accumulated detritus. The floor is a patchwork of cracked concrete and pooled liquids of various colors, and the air shimmers with heat rising from vents that still occasionally release bursts of acrid steam. Graffiti in multiple languages covers the interior walls, some recent enough to suggest the location is still occasionally visited by scavengers or those seeking to hide from the upper city. The foundry's control room, accessible by a rickety metal staircase, contains rusted machinery and illegible logbooks that might reveal what was processed here before the facility fell into disrepair.
