Varn

Created by G4L4KTO

Varn exists in the depths of an expansive cave system, a sprawling subterranean refuge carved into the bedrock far beneath the surface world. The city developed organically over centuries as outcasts, fugitives, and the desperate sought sanctuary in its shadowed passages, creating a unique civilization where traditional social hierarchies hold little sway. Permanent structures of stone and salvaged wood cluster throughout the caverns, while countless smaller dwellings have been carved directly into cave walls or constructed from whatever materials inhabitants could gather. The perpetual darkness is broken only by bioluminescent fungi cultivated on cave walls and flickering torchlight, casting dancing shadows across damp stone surfaces. A diverse population of multiple races coexists here—dwarves, humans, goblinoids, and others—united not by kinship but by circumstance and the unspoken understanding that Varn asks no questions about one's past. The constant drip of water echoes through the tunnels, and moisture clings to everything, making the air heavy and cool regardless of the season above. Trade routes have naturally developed through the cave networks, connecting Varn's various districts and creating a thriving black market economy. Despite its grim appearance and the hardships of underground life, many residents have chosen to remain, having found community and acceptance in a place the surface world had rejected them from.

Landmarks

The Weeping Wall

A massive cavern wall where underground springs continuously seep through cracks in the stone, creating a constant cascade of mineral-rich water that pools at its base. The water has carved intricate channels and formations over centuries, and the bioluminescent fungi thriving in the perpetual moisture create an ethereal blue-green glow. Adventurers gather here to collect fresh water, trade information in hushed tones along the wall's alcoves, and listen to the haunting echoes of dripping water that some say carries the whispered stories of those who came before. The wall serves as an unofficial meeting point where refugees mark their arrival by leaving small tokens wedged into the stone crevices.

The Bone Market

A sprawling bazaar nestled within a massive natural cavern where the city's black market economy thrives. Makeshift stalls constructed from driftwood, salvaged metal, and bone are arranged in winding rows, their wares illuminated by clusters of bioluminescent fungi suspended in crude cages. The air hangs thick with moisture and the mingled scents of strange goods—alchemical components, stolen artifacts, contraband weapons, and provisions of questionable origin. Hooded merchants and desperate buyers conduct hushed transactions in the shadows between stalls, while skeletal remains of long-dead creatures serve as structural supports and macabre decorations. The Market operates in perpetual twilight, its true extent hidden by darkness and mist, making it impossible to know if you've seen all it has to offer.
