A setting becomes a story world when something is happening now. The goal is not to invent a predetermined plot. It is to create a situation with enough pressure that Characters must reveal who they are.
By the end of this step, you will have an opening situation that connects your location, history, factions, Characters, and artifacts.
Create the change
Complete this sentence:
For a long time, [unstable arrangement] has continued, but now [change], so [people] must decide [meaningful choice] before [consequence].
Use pieces you have already made. In Emberwake, the Tidemark Exchange has always closed when the islands separate, but one island has begun leaving early. Merchants, navigators, and separated families must choose what to save before the bridges break.
Build three doors into the situation
Offer different ways to engage:
- A personal door: Help, protect, confront, or understand someone.
- A practical door: Find a route, object, resource, or piece of information.
- A consequential door: Support one future for the community over another.
The doors may converge, but none should be the single correct way to experience the world.
Give every force momentum
For each important Character or faction, decide what they will do if nobody intervenes. This prevents the world from feeling as though it exists only in response to the visitor.
Then choose one visible sign that time is passing: a tide rising, votes being counted, supplies dwindling, a procession approaching, or a creature beginning to wake.
Create it in Summon Worlds
Choose a Character rooted in the situation and begin a Bound Chat. Establish where the conversation begins, what has just changed, and what the Character wants right now. Allow connected World, Location, and Equipment details to support the exchange.
Do not use the chat only to recite lore. Ask questions, take an action, disagree, or introduce a complication. Notice which parts of the world become relevant naturally.
World checkpoint
Can the situation change in at least three plausible ways? Does every path reveal something about a world pillar? If the answer is already decided, replace a required outcome with a difficult choice.
