The Living Labyrinth

Ether Gates

The Ether Gates stand as crumbling monuments scattered throughout the realm, their origins lost to antiquity. These weathered stone archways and doorframes bear intricate runic inscriptions that scholars have long theorized served as conduits between worlds, though their true purpose remains enigmatic. Many of the Gates show signs of catastrophic damage—fractured stones, eroded surfaces, and runes that have faded to near-invisibility—suggesting either deliberate destruction or centuries of neglect and decay. Those foolish or desperate enough to pass through an active Gate find themselves thrust into the Ether, a nightmarish realm that appears as a corrupted, decaying reflection of the material world, as though eons of entropy have compressed into this shadowy dimension. The Ether is now home to countless undead entities that have accumulated over the ages, drawn to or trapped within this liminal space. Chief among these horrors are the Ether Reapers—spectral beings of pure malevolence that drift through the gloom in tattered robes, their skeletal frames wielding massive scythes with purposeful intent. Scholars debate whether these creatures actively guard the Gates or simply hunt anything that enters their domain. Few who have ventured through the Gates have returned with their sanity intact, and fewer still have survived encounters with the Reapers. The Ether Gates remain largely abandoned and avoided by civilized peoples, standing as haunting reminders of a bygone era when such passages were maintained and perhaps even necessary.
